This month the Seattle Astronomical Society (SAS) meeting will be the Annual Awards Banquet. The speaker at our Saturday, January 16, banquet will be George Wallerstein, who will speak on research with small telescopes. He recently retired as Professor of Astronomy at the University of Washington, where he was chairman of the department for many years. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1958 and has been with the University of Washington since 1965.

His research has been concerned mostly with the chemical composition of stellar atmospheres, important clues to the origin of a star and its evolution. Most of this research involves careful observation through a telescope and the use of computer models o f stellar atmospheres during the data analysis. He also studies the structure of the interstellar medium. He is married to Julie Lutz of Washington State University, who gave a talk to us last spring on present-day Chinese astronomy.

The banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the VFW Hall in Ballard, 2812 NW Market. The menu of rotisserie chicken, baked ham and vegetarian casserole will be catered by Judy and Gerry Ann Suryan.
